So here’s where I’m at – I have got to the point of the first layer of masking.  Here it is:

So, next out came the airbrush, and I started with the base and the scabbard. For the base, I sprayed scorched brown, desert yellow, bleached bone, and a burnt umber oil paint wash. the first pic was when it was still a bit wet, sorry about that.

Now, when I tidied up my painting area (i.e. my living room) I found a bunch of tamiya paints and thinner that I had a few years ago when I wasn’t doing scifi/fantasy minis, but miniature cars. Jackpot! so I decided to give them a shot. My goodness, I can hardly believe how smooth this stuff comes out through an airbrush. I’m going to be thinning everything for my brush with this alcohol based tamiya thinner from now on. as such, this is the smoothest paint I’ve ever laid down. Fantastic. Anyway, a base layer of tamiya dark flesh, and then many many layers of heavily thinned tamiya red and orange, and the scabbard was done. I’ll paint the rope by hand I think, and I still need to hit it with a matt varnish and paint on the white reflection to make it appear gloss.  Here are the results:
