Ninja Goblin Introduction
Hey,
This project is almost done, but I am keen t0 share the process with you on my blog so the process that I go through on a painting project of mine are apparent. As such I’m going to be amalgamating my posts from CMON and Platoon Britannica into my posts. I really hope you like him, he’s one of my favourite projects so far. After I didn’t win any statuettes at Golden Demon ’09 despite 9 (9!) finalist pins, I found myself… lacking… in motivation. I had the pleasure of being offered one of these wonderful huge models by Sean Green, the sculptor. He initially did three large scale resin sculpts for the ill-fated Firewind Industries, and this is one of them, my personal favourite, shown here in it’s studio paintjob:
What a fantastic miniature. Even now, every time I look at him I love it. The first time i came across it, Boris from Platoon Britannica was painting one:
Another absolutely wonderful interpretation of this fantastic miniature. I’ve loved working on him more than I can say. I hope you like seeing him unfold as much as I’ve enjoyed painting him, he’s a singularly unique mini.

So then, for those of you who don’t know what this absolutely gorgeous model looks like:

this is it before clean up. Its so well cast, that this gargantuan model took less than 2 hrs to clean up start to finish. awesome. Apart from a dodgy patch under the chin, this mini is nigh on perfect.
so I began by using a scalpel and sand paper to smooth the mould lines, and then took him for a bath…

once he was all washed up I towel dried them and then got the hair dryer out on them. This also served to heat the sword blade and make it slightly more straight than it was.

and now it’s ready for paint, so it was time to crack out the corks, resin stands and a plethora of other things I attach models to when I work on them. Then I sprayed them chaos black. Then I found that the paint wasn’t adhering well, which isn’t normally a problem for me, but there you go, and so I gave him a couple more coats than I normally would, but it hasn’t in any way hidden any detail or anyhting. Every time I look at the sculpt it gives me goose bumps, even little divots on the knuckles. Nice!

now I’ve masked each component off ready for the first round of airbrushing…I’ll upload a pic when the rest of my mammoth half-gig upload has happened!
thanks each of you for all your support, I couldnt do stuff like this and stay so happy with it if it wasn’t you guys.
I should say now what I’m trying to do here…I’m going to paint as much of this ‘mini’ as I can with oil paints, and I’m gonna use as much airbrushing as I can too. mainly to practice with both things. the sword blades will be nmm, and after seeing that wonderful airbrushed sword at the GD pb meetup in the hotel, I gotta give that a try myself!
man I love greenskins
which is funny, because I almost never paint or sculpt them. meh.
Thanks for all the encouragement so far, I shall keep going, this is rather a lot of fun!
James
